Dear Ellen,

I recently bought a starter kit from Jim and I wanted to add more peat moss to cover the food scraps better. I bought a bag of peat moss at the hardware store, but when I got home I realized that it had small amounts of fertilizer in it. Can I still use it in the worm bin? If not, is there a special type/brand of peat moss you recommend?

Thank you.

P.S. This has been a very fun experience so far and the worms have really grown and multiplied quickly!

Sara, Duluth, MN

Dear Sara,

I'm glad your worms are doing well! What kind of fertilizer is in the peat moss you bought? Chemical fertilizers tend to be very hard on worms and may kill them. We usually buy our peat moss at Dan's Feed Bin in Superior.

I hope this helps!

Environmentally yours,

Ellen
